TRIBUTE – MAYOR HAZEL McCALLION

Fellow Members:

We have all heard of the passing of Hazel McCallion who served as the Mayor of the City of Mississauga from 1978 to 2014, and who had the honour of being the longest serving Mayor in the history of Canada.

In her role as Mayor, she ensured that she attended all functions to which she was invited. Thus, she attended the various functions of our club, and on those occasions she delivered words of wisdom, encouragement and advice. She always outlined her plans for seniors, and spoke of her vision for Seniors and the improvement of Senior Affairs in the City of Mississauga.

Her last attendance at our club was on her farewell retirement tour, when she spent an exceptionally long time with us, and broke bread with us. Her vibrant personality will be forever etched in our minds. She has indeed made a lasting contribution to the City of Mississauga, Society, History and to Canada.

On behalf of the Members of the Board of Management of the Mississauga 55 Plus Cari-Can Group, Members, my family and myself, I offer my deepest and heartfelt sympathies to her family and the citizens of the City of Mississauga.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Let us be reminded of these words penned by the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

”Lives of great men all remind us,

We can make our lives sublime,

And departing, leave behind us,

Footprints on the sands of time.”
